Winter of 2023 marked a significant milestone in my ongoing quest to transform my land into a vibrant sanctuary of greenery and life. For the past two years, I’ve delved into the world of planting trees, learning the intricacies of where they thrive and how to nurture them. Last year, I took a first decisive step forward by acquiring a variety of saplings from the Woodland Trust: Silver Birch, Rowan, Wild Cherry, English Oak, Field Maple, and Grey Willow.

However, it quickly became apparent that simply obtaining saplings wasn’t enough.
To safeguard their growth and protect them from curious critters and unforeseen threats, I realised the importance of tree protectors. Without these guardians, my efforts could easily be thwarted by pests such as deer and rabbits. In the heart of the Devon countryside deer often visit!
Thankfully, with a bit of research and facebook marketplace, I managed to find both free and bulk tree protectors, ensuring that my saplings would have the best possible chance to flourish. Armed with supplies and a vision, the planting began.

As I dug into the earth, I couldn’t help but marvel at the simplicity yet significance of each step.
Planting trees is indeed a straightforward process, but it demands patience, attention to detail and time. Not forgetting some winter clothes. From digging the hole to securing the post and carefully placing the tree protector, every action carried the weight of anticipation and hope for the future.
Yet, amidst the practical considerations, there was also room for creativity and contemplation. Where should each sapling be placed? How would they complement each other and their surroundings? These questions, while important, also reminded me of the need to balance planning with action. Starting at the bottom over a number of days I worked my way up the hill of the field.

In selecting the tree species, I’m aimed for diversity, envisioning a landscape rich in colours, textures, and purposes. While my saplings provided a solid foundation, I yearned for more vibrant hues to dot the woodland canvas. Thus, my journey led me to seek out a local nursery specialising in unique and colourful specimens, eager to infuse even more life into my burgeoning forest. I got these after I planted most of the saplings and placed them in between them.

As I reflect on this journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to play a part in nature’s grand symphony. Each tree planted is not just a testament to my efforts but a gift to the ecosystem, a promise of growth and renewal for generations to come.
