Spacing out the orchard.

After tending to the orchard here for several years and planting some new fruit trees as I could afford them, I began to notice that my fruit trees were a tad too snugly planted. Realising the importance of adequate spacing for optimal growth and future productivity, I decided to undertake the task of relocating a couple of them.

Surveying the orchard, I assessed each tree – considering its current size, potential for future growth and position. After identifying the two candidates for relocation, I armed myself with my trusty spade and set to work. Despite a hint of nervousness about disturbing the delicate root systems, I knew that the long-term benefits outweighed any temporary discomfort.

I gently dug around the base of each chosen tree, taking care to preserve as much of the root system as possible. The more I adventure on the land the more it becomes a labour of love, rather than a chore. Knowing that by giving these trees a bit more space, I will be investing in the future health and productivity of the orchard.

Once the trees were successfully uprooted, I transported them to a new area of the orchard that had previously housed a polytunnel, which had unfortunately succumbed to a fierce storm a couple of years ago.. It seemed like the perfect spot to accommodate the transplanted trees, offering ample sunlight and room to thrive.

Now, as I look out at my orchard, I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that I’ve taken proactive steps to ensure its continued success. With the trees settled into their new homes, I eagerly anticipate the coming seasons, when I’ll be able to enjoy the literal fruits of my labour.
